When Josef Strauss travelled to Russia with his brother Johann in 1869, he felt a great longing for his wife in Vienna and therefore began to write this wistful mazurka and sent the score of Aus der Ferne (From Afar) to Vienna. It premiered there on 2 July 1869 in the Vienna Volksgarten conducted by Eduard Strauss. The arrangement is kept in the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra and was commissioned and first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their "New Year's Concert" on 6 January 2012 at the "Grosses Festspielhaus" (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria. A live recording of this concert is available at https://www.salzburg-windphilharmonic.at/de/musikalische-schaetze-aus-russland-und-wien/ or https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/classic/detail/-/art/schaetze-aus-russland-und-wien/hnum/10428736?iampartner=303&subid=umr54&ref=partner.jpc.de .
