Northern Lights was created for a student who broke her right pinkie. It can be played either with the left hand alone or with both hands, but the fingering reflects left hand only. If you have ever seen a display of the northern lights, you know how awe-inspiring they can be. In this piece, I recall from my childhood seeing a Roman candle-like episode of brilliant sparkling light shooting up into the night sky. The opening theme is reminiscent of this glorious beauty. It is echoed in the second theme, a series of beautiful and carefully organized arpeggios, carefully notated fingering to achieve them smoothly. A melody is discovered with accents to bring it out, through the undulating patterns. This piece is a great way to keep your injured student engaged and learning!
