2018 Holiday Contest EntryFlexible arrangement of We Wish You a Merry Christmas for jazz solo, small ensemble, saxophone choir, jazz combo or beginning jazz band.
I arranged this for my 7th grade jazz combo (a few somewhat advanced students that were interested in learning jazz). I initially arranged it for 1 trumpet, 1 sax, 1 tenor, and piano but it is a flexible arrangement with the melody doubled in the trumpet and sax and the tenor and optional trombone part have harmony. You could use the optional trombone in addition to the tenor or instead of tenor. If you use a bass or bari sax, tell your piano player to cut the bass clef and just comp on the chords. This arrangement would also work nicely as a saxophone choir, with or without piano accompaniment. You could even use this as a solo for one trumpet or one sax and piano.
You can easily add a drummer and just have them play a simple swing beat.
