This is written in one broad movement for a Flute in C quartet. I wrote it because I love the flute and want to incorporate a theme and variations approach. Each "terrace" gets a little more involved with counterpoint, etc., in the tonal fabric, building up to a dramatic tension point and then a D.C. back to the beginning to hold it all together and come to a final cadence. It is loosely based and inspired by the Baroque dance suite approach, very freely using the drama, echoes, tensions and cadences, telling a story. It is motivated by universal human experiences in living life (the drama of the terrace dynamics), making the most of opportunities using available resources -- all that good stuff! The title page is a dramatic photo of the Northern Lights from Alaska showing "terraces," starting with our earth and looking upwards to infinity. The audio clip is not a sample, but a MIDI rendition of the whole composition.
