This enchanting poem about the awesome power and depth of the sea was the creation of Mr. Henry Orloff as he gazed upon the surging tide as it crashed on the shore. He wrote the poem in his native language, German, and later I worked with him and his daughter Edith Orloff to produce an English translation that matched the syllabic stress and word placement of the original and thus was usable and equally powerful with the music for the German text. I present it here with the English title and the accompanying recording is of the English text. I have it elsewhere in choral music under its original German title, Die See Steht Nimmer Still. The song is strongly melodic, richly harmonic, with a partnering piano part that evokes the ebb and flow of the sea. As with the choral version, both the German and the English are present in the score.
