This piano offertory is a setting of the Orthodox Christian chant for Advent/Nativity (Christmas). In the Christian east it is known as a Megalynarion; in the west, it is similar to the Magnificat. The chant text was: "O my soul, magnify her who is more honorable and who is more glorious than the heavenly host. A mystery I behold which is strange and wondrous: the cave is heaven and the Virgin is the throne of the Cherubim. In the confines of a manger is laid the infinite Christ our God Whom we praise and glorify."
