Written in the K'au District on the Island of Hawai'i, this piece for flute trio captures the sound of the wind rising in the distance off the ocean and whispering through the old growth, ohia trees. There is a gentle 'whoosh' as the wind brushes past your ears. A careful listener will hear that wind from old Hawai'i. Written in 2007, "Windweaver" has become a favorite of flutists and audiences at the Alaska Flute Studies Center in Anchorage, Alaska. 6:00 minutes (ASCAP) Composer Notes on "Windweaver": I've written this piece with texture that in places thins to one flute then thickens again to all three flutes. This gives the effect of the rising and falling of the gentle wind. In addition, there is subtle dissonance written into the fourth beat of some measures. This creates the effect of the wind brushing past your ears. Before performing I often suggest members of the audience brush the palm of their hands past their ears, then listen for this effect in the piece as it's played. People have been delighted to tell me that they actually heard the wind in the music! I hope you enjoy "Windweaver."
