BACK TO SCHOOL 2015 In 1974, only 4 members of the Mauritius Kestrel species (a small bird of the falcon family) existed. Through great efforts, led by the late, great naturalist, Gerard Durrell, the species now numbers around 800. This piece celebrates the persistent conservation effort to rescue this once nearly extinct animal. FLIGHT OF THE KESTREL features a theme accompanied by arpeggios and pulsating repeated notes which gives the music an ever-present driving energy signifying flight. This work features opportunities for younger musicians that will allow them to focus on more advanced compositional techniques. For instance, a central fugal section provides the players to listen for balance, while, at the climax of the work, the players are sure to enjoy a brief aleatoric gesture, encouraging them to avoid synchronizing with each other.
