This arrangement of Acker Bilk's famous song for clarinet and strings offers an opportunity for a developing string orchestra to play with a budding solo clarinettist. Two versions of the orchestral accompaniment are presented: in Bb and A, so either version of the clarinet may be used. Alternatively the clarinet may be substituted by a voice; the clarinet optionally taking the upper Violin I part during the interlude to display the bright clarino register (with the singer tacet). So there is flexibility for performance.Acker Bilk's memorable cadenzetta is preserved in the clarinet part. The string parts are of an early intermediate standard but challenges players to play at times' contrapuntally' at times 'chorally'. The middle section then allows the orchestra to showcase itself with prominent bass pizzicati (as in the mp3 sample) suggestive of a jazz line underpinning a classical contrapuntal string ensemble. This arrangement is paticularly suitable for a string orchestra of early intermediate standard, such a school or adult-learners/returners' orchestra. A rock drummer may also be included who would improvise, but it is recommended that brushes should be used.
