Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 was well received during its premiere in 1813, so much so, that its second movement, Allegretto, was encored. In this arrangement for 8 horns and tuba (or 9 horns) three timbres are used: open, muted, and stopped. It is important for hornists to keep in mind that not everything muted is quiet. In fact, the player, more often than not, should use more air to make the muted parts sound balanced in the texture.
