This is the traditional Christmas tune once harmonized in the 16th century by Michael Praetorius. This setting is for mixed brass quartet (two trumpets, one trombone, one tuba). It was (is) very difficult to satisfactorily place this extraordinarily pure tune for the brass quartet medium. Be advised- this setting is very challenging to perform well. In addition to the very exposed, fragile parts, many suspensions and rubato, flowing lines this is in concert G-flat major. This key resonates with emotion most warmly for brass and is why it was used. The trombone and tuba parts are particularly involved. If thoughtfully prepared and executed in a musically-sensitive manner, this is a very powerful piece.
