I find that piano teachers are often faced with the challenge of finding good preparation repertoire for Chopin Nocturnes or other mature works in the standard piano literature. Good answers include the selections from Griegs Lyric Pieces or Mendelssohns Songs Without Words. Since there seems to be a need for this level of repertoire I wrote Prelude in A major. This piece presents the student with many of the same musical challenges found in many of the Chopin Nocturnes; a singing melody, various motifs calling for precise dynamic control, control of soft accompanying chords and arpeggiated figures; all excellent preparations for ones first Chopin Nocturne. So, try the Prelude in A major for a good preparatory piece for the mature works of the romantic and contemporary periods. This short 3:11 minute composition is also a great piece for a church offertory
