This book is an exciting, innovative approach to learning music and the violin. The book is a collection of 33 Children's Songs and Folk Songs from the United States and around the world. Each song begins with a brief historical introduction and lyrics. Children are encouraged to sing and clap the song before playing. The songs are organized according to technical elements: high second fingers, slurred and hooked bowings, high third fingers, compound meter, minor key, pentatonic. Each song is combined with other songs in the book to create a number of mash-ups. Short theory sections occur throughout book explaining aspect of music and composition. Students are encouraged to compose their own mash-ups and may submit their compositions online for feedback. This book is a wonderful supplement for both public school string classes and Suzuki classes. The mash-ups are for 2-4 violins, providing opportunity for ensemble playing.
