Ludwig Wilhelm Maurer (1789-1878) was born in Potsdam, Germany, but at age 17 moved to St. Petersburg, Russia. He was a prominent composer, conductor, and a virtuoso violinist, and was director of the French opera there. His "12 Little Pieces" was originally written for two trumpets in Bb, two French horns (in Eb and F), and trombone, but these arrangements are for the standard two trumpets in Bb, French horn in F, trombone, and tuba. "12 Little Pieces" is one of the first pieces ever composed for brass quintet, but not published until after Maurers death. The pieces are only a couple of minutes long each and are not difficult to play (level 3-4), but they are melodically light and elegant and harmonically evocative of mid-1800s salons.
