The Dutch Composer, Johan B Kok (1889-1954), wrote over two- hundred compositions for different combinations of instruments, all of which included the Mandolin or the Mandolin Orchestra. Joska, originally written for two Mandolins, Mandola and Guitar, bears the subtitle and style of the Zigeuner Romance or Gypsy Romance, and it may well have been inspired by Montis better known Czardas, which, significantly, was also originally written for Mandolin and Piano. Both pieces have contrasting slow and fast sections, which is typical of Central European tavern music, commonly associated with Hungary. Czardas, of course, means tavern in Hungarian.
