This romantic fantasy piano builds on Lady Alicia Scott's tune (ca. 1835) for William Douglas's poem about his forbidden love for the daughter of the 1st baronet of Maxwelton, Robert Laurie. The octave leap in the final section of each verse heightens the emotion of "And for bonnie Annie Laurie, I'd lay me doon and dee." The irony is, he didn't have to lay himself down and die; he just had to change his politics and his religion. But that wouldn't have made for such a good poem. Enjoy.
