Joplin intimated that this rag was inspired by the Theodore Roosevelt speech of the same. Roosevelt articulated the "American" temperament of a strenuous life that included, working hard, personal defense (learning how to box for instance) and being a good citizen. The strutting, upbeat style of this rag seems to reflect the upbeat idealism that characterized the United States at the turn of the century.
