'Nantes' is a commission from the French Ministry of Culture for a concerto for tuba and band. It was written in 1991 and first performed on June 10, 1992 by Michel Godard and the Philhar of Nantes, France conducted by Frederic Oster.
In four movements and with a duration of 11 minutes, Nantes puts the tuba soloist in several musical environments from quiet and ominous to fast and energetic. The movement headings indicate this. The 1st movement is dedicated to Fafner followed by a Waltz that has trouble beginning. The 3rd movement is dedicated to Don Ellis and the final movement is dedicated to Bach and Ives. A varied and virtuoso piece for both tuba soloist and band.
