Score and bassoon part included. The Duo for bassoon and piano was written for Benjamin Coelho and Catherine Schneider in 2008. The Premiere was given by Benjamin Coelho, bassoon & Alan Huckleberry, piano at the Macbride Auditorium, University of Iowa, on February 1, 2009. The work is in one movement consisting of three sections. The first section (measures 1-63) consists of a bel canto bassoon solo in interplay and dialog with the piano. The piano often plays chords resembling bell-like chimes. The second section (measures 64-113) begins with a repeating accompaniment pattern played by the bassoon which serves as a back drop to the pianos virtuosic fragments. This is abruptly interrupted by a return to the pianos bell-like chimes followed by a short interlude leading to measures 95-109 in which the piano now plays the accompanying pattern while the bassoon is featured in short virtuosic fragments. Another bell-like chimes passage leads to the third and final section beginning from measure 114. This is an interactive dance where the bassoon and piano are equal partners in both leaping melodic outlines and chromatic winding lines. This last section is, in fact, based on the melodic material of the piece up to measure 114. The work culminates in a rapid sixteenth-note flourish. The duration is 9'20.
