Silent Durations XXXI (a Zen experience) was written as a tribute to the poet Federico Garcia-Lorca and is dedicated to Jose Cano-Lopez, artistic director of La Compagnie José Manuel Cano Lopez in Tours, France. The work was written at a time when it seemed that maybe the final resting place of Federico Garcia-Lorca would be found. After months of suspense, it turned out that this was not going to be the case and the search continues. Silent Durations XXXI for piano solo explores the mystery surrounding the final burial location of Federico Garcia-Lorca. The silences are punctuated with brief expressive and quiet murmurs and there is also the occasional chiming of church bells. These Silent Duration pieces are notable for their incorporation of silence as an integral part of the compositional fabric. The duration is 7'00.
