2018 Keyboard Contest Entry
December 1, 1873. "Saved alone, what shall I do?" Horatio Spaffords wife telegrammed the message from Wales. She and their four daughters had been shipwrecked while crossing the Atlantic. Only she survived. As the story is told, Spafford was inspired to write this passionate lyric while passing the very spot where the fateful Ville Du Havre had sunk, taking his four daughters to their watery grave.
This solo piano arrangement of Spaffords hymn seeks to communicate the contrasting despair and hope that he seemed to experience.
