Scott Joplin perfected ragtime music and raised it to a true art form. A man of his time, yet clearly hindered by it, his strenuous life unfolded with joy and sorrow, success and failure. The "Strenuous Life" presents a simple stroll, high-strutting kicks, intricate syncopations, a gentle middle section, and a stirring conclusion. The original piano rag was published in 1902 by John Stark & Son of St. Louis, Missouri. The title may have referred to a famous speech delivered by Teddy Roosevelt in Chicago in 1899. In this version, the composition was arranged for Clarinet Quartet by Harry Walker.
