Giovanni Gabrieli was organist of St Marks, Venice from 1585 until his death in 1612. Much of his music reflects the antiphonal possibilities of this great cathedral, with its many galleries from which the musicians could perform. This is one of Gabrielis numerous Canzonas, arranged for brass quintet. The dotted figure which first appears at bar 32 is imitated in each voice at all possible positions in the bar, a minor tour de force. A full range of symphonic and brass band parts is included.
