Stabat Mater Dolorosa (Vivaldi) This is an arrangement of the beautiful first part of the Stabat Mater by Vivaldi for brass band. The solo voice is given to the flugelhorn as it matches the deeper, richer tone of the alto. The band is split into concertante and ripieni groups, The first consisting of Solo cornet, Solo horn, Euphonium and Eb Bass with the rest of the band providing the ripieni. The score is organised in the same way. I thought it would be good to place the concertante group on one side of the stage, with the soloist and have the ripieni group on the other - if there's enough room. Obviously the scoring is very thin wherever the soloist is playing, but the whole piece needs to be quiuet and coontemplative.
