Ottorino Respighi was born in Bologna in 1879 and died in Rome in 1936. His three suites of Ancient Airs and Dances are based on Italian and French music for the lute, an instrument used to accompany both dances and singers and as a solo instrument in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Suite No. 3 (1936) is originally for String Orchestra (here transcribed and arranged for SATB Saxophone Quartet) and is written in four movements as follows: I. Anonymous (c. 1600): Italiana. This is a simple popular song of the time, marked Andantino, and is set in ¾ time by Respighi. II. Jean-Baptiste Besard: Arie di Corte. This is a ballet based on Airs of the Court. It opens with It is sad to be in love with you (Andante cantabile) and then follow Farewell forever, shepherdess (Allegretto), Lovely eyes that see me clearly (Vivace), The Skiff of Love (Lento con grande expressione), What divinity touches my soul (Allegro vivace), and If it is for my innocence that you love me (Vivacissimo). III. Anonymous (c. 1600): Siciliana. This is a gentle dancing song of pastoral character from Sicily. IV. Ludovico Roncalli (late 17th c.): Passacaglia. From a collection of pieces for Spanish guitar published in 1692. Literally a "passing in the street", a passacaglia denotes an old Spanish dance in triple time. In its classical form, it is a group of continuous variations built on a recurring bass theme. Durations: 1. ca. 2:39; 2. ca. 6:18; 3. ca. 3:26; 4. ca. 3:14; Total: ca. 15:39 contact me at james.pybus56@gmail.com
