Beginning with the familiar theme from Danny Boy, this study is rendered as a set of variations for breath control and as a counting exercise, employing quarter notes, eighths, sixteenths, and eighth note triplets, along with some 2 on 3 and 3 on 4 note harmony as accompaniment. The clarinets also switch lines in mid-stream and back again. Depending on pedagogical purpose, this can be played either from the score or from separate parts. Moreover, this etude can also be used, just for fun, as mid-level sight-reading for advanced students.
