Charles Edward Duble was a tall, lanky trombone player who, as a circus band musician, was always seeking an opportunity to play a practical joke on someone. Duble's more serious side emerged when he composed for the many circus bands of the time time. Battle of the Winds can be a march, or it can be a battle among the wind players in the band. Duble's allegiance to the low brass gives the euphoniums, trombones, and tubas an edge at times, but the contest is fascinating from the introduction to the "stinger" at the end. Merle Evans and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey's Circus Band performed it for years during their pre-game show.
