This work come from Camille Saint-Saens' (1835-1921) only operatic success, Samson and Delilah. Composed between 1867 and 1876, the Bacchanale is an exciting instrumental ballet sequence from the third act of the opera. The Bacchanale falls in the midst of pagan ceremonies at the Philistines' Temple of Dagon, the same building Samson topples at the close of the opera. Saint-Saens evokes an atmosphere of exotic, near eastern ritual, utilizing melodies of augmented second to bring the work to a frenzied close. This arrangement for clarinet quartet (Bb Clarinet 1 or Eb Clarinet, Bb Clarinet 2, Bb Clarinet 3 or Eb Alto Clarinet, Bb Bass Clarinet) reflects faithfully the original for orchestra.
