Colin Kirkpatricks Sanctus for viola and piano is a lyrical, elegiac melody that reflects the spirit of a more peaceful age. The musical language is tonal but slightly chromatic and has proved a popular item at recitals where its been played. The piano shares some of the melodic material with the viola and the music evokes peace and tranquility; theres a brief yet passionate passage near the middle of the piece before the music returns to the quite place where it began. The final section of the viola part is written in the treble clef and the top note in the G just above the staff. Its estimated that the standard is about ABRSM Grade 5. This work would make an excellent addition to a viola recital. The score (piano and viola) and the solo viola part are presented in a single PDF file. (Duration: 03:07)
