This arrangement of the traditional hymn begins with the low brass playing a "determined" bass line that supports a progressive addition of melody and harmony. The texture changes to an antiphonal-style that could possibly be performed with the ensemble split in two. The piece returns to the "grounded" feel but with full sounds and rich harmonies. This work would be a satisfying prelude to a congregational singing of the hymn in its traditional format or simply programed for concert settings. While not technically difficult, this music will challenge the endurance and focus of the trombone and tuba players.
