Shchedryk is not just a song. For Ukraine, it is a symbol, a voice of culture, and proof that the whole world hears us.Shchedryk is a Ukrainian skhedrivka, the roots of which go back to ancient times, to pre-Christian times. It is a song about prosperity, hope, revival, and the light that comes to the house with the New Year. Mykola Leontovych turned a folk melody into a masterpiece an elegant choral arrangement that became the musical DNA of Ukraine. It was Shchedryk that opened the world to Ukraine: in 19191920, the Ukrainian Republican Chapel under the direction of Oleksandr Koshits performed it throughout Europe and the USA; after a performance at Carnegie Hall, the melody conquered America; later it became known as Carol of the Bells, but its roots are Ukrainian. For Ukrainians, "Shchedryk" is: a memory of our culture; musical proof of our identity; a song that has survived bans, wars and attempts at appropriation; a quiet but very strong act of cultural resistance. When "Shchedryk" sounds, the world hears Ukraine.Even when they tried to silence us.
