Product Description

Franz von Vecsey (18931935) was a Hungarian virtuoso violinist and composer active in the early decades of the 20th century.

He began performing in public at the age of six and went on to become one of the most highly regarded violinists of his time, collaborating early in his career with Béla Bartók.

Although he was best known as a performer, Vecsey also composed short, character pieces, often intended for his own recital programsamong these, Valse triste has become his most widely recognized work.

This arrangement of the romantic miniature Valse triste by Franz (Ferenc) von Vecsey reimagines the original work in a new timbral setting, featuring the trombone as solo instrument accompanied by a string orchestra.

Originally composed for violin and piano, Valse triste is admired for its expressive melodic line and its melancholic, introspective atmosphere, characteristic of early 20th-century romantic salon music. In this arrangement, the trombone takes over the principal melodic role, highlighting its lyrical qualities, warm tone, and singing legatoparticularly in the middle and lower registers.

The string orchestra provides a transparent and supportive accompaniment, carefully balanced to preserve the intimate character of the piece while allowing the soloist to shape long, expressive phrases. The orchestral writing is accessible for intermediate-level ensembles, yet refined enough for concert performance.

This arrangement is suitable for:

solo performances with string orchestra
educational and school concerts
lyrical or romantic concert programs
developing expressive and cantabile playing for trombonists
Approximate duration: 3 minutes
Difficulty level: Intermediate
Instrumentation: Solo Trombone, Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello, Double Bass
