Product Description

"Some Through the Water" takes its title and its main themes from two American folk hymns--"God Leads Us Along" and "He Leadeth Me." The band begins low, in the tenor and bass voices, hinting at the verse of "God Leads Us Along." The piece transforms into a flowing first iteration of the "He Leadeth Me" melody, led by the reeds. While the accompaniment moves in 3/4, the melody itself feels closer to a 2/2. This hemiola offset is fundamental to the entirety of the piece. This melody develops and expands with the brass, before blooming into the chorus of "He Leadeth Me," in 4/4. This fades into 3/4, before the chorus of "God Leads Us Along" enters as a light dance tune, carried by a quartet of woodwind soloists over light percussion (from which the title "Some through the water . . ." comes). This explodes with the entry of brass into an bright, offset/echoing iteration of the refrain, before careening off into a bluer, wilder verse of the hymn. The piece ends with a joyful expressions of both chorus overtop each other, with the high melody voices singing "God Leads Us Along," while the basses, in that fundamental hemiola, belt "He Leadeth Me."
