I wrote the theme of this piece with the thought of autumn in mind. Autumn reminds us of the changing colors in nature so I wrote each variation with the idea of great change in mind. The first variation begins with a bright contrast from the calm opening of the theme. I envisioned this theme to be reminiscent of the heavy rainfall we often get in Oregon. Variation II begins significantly more tranquil. It is the most beautiful variation of them all as the melody sings over the accompanying line. Variation III is my favorite variation; it takes the style of a funeral march which I thought fit the overall theme of autumn. Variation IV is another gentle variation, this variation is very unique in which I envisioned that each note would represent a leaf falling as the trees transition for the winter season. Lastly the fifth variation is an intense triumphant finale that leads to the transition from autumn to the cold winter.
