Mel Tormé co-wrote the timeless holiday standard The Christmas Song in 1945 with lyricist Robert Wells . Also known by its opening line, Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire, it was written during a sweltering summer day in Los Angeles when Wells jotted down a few wintry lines in an effort to feel cooler. Tormé happened upon the pad, saw the lines, and within about 40 minutes, the two had completed the song .The first recording was made by The Nat King Cole Trio in June 1946, followed by a string-backed version in August that became a hit. Cole later re-recorded it in 1953 and 1961his 1961 version is now considered definitive and was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry .Over the years, the song has become one of the most performed and beloved Christmas songs of all time, embodying the cozy imagery of holiday warmth it originally sought to evoke on that blistering summer afternoon. Here is an arrangement for solo recorder you will enjoy playing this holiday season.Click here for more recorder solos
