"The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Dont Be Late)" is a 1958 novelty Christmas carol written and recorded by Ross Bagdasarian under the stage name David Seville. Using variable tape speeds, Bagdasarian created the high-pitched chipmunk voices, credited to Alvin and the Chipmunkshis cartoon virtual band that would later grow into a media franchise. The recording was nominated for Record of the Year at the inaugural Grammy Awards and won three Grammys.Following the success of Witch Doctor earlier in 1958, Liberty Records encouraged Bagdasarian to create another hit novelty song. He responded with three singing chipmunks, named after Liberty executives. The song opens with Dave asking the Chipmunks if they are ready to sing. Simon and Theodore respond positively, while Alvins silence prompts Dave to yell his name. After the first verse, Dave praises Simon and Theodore but tells Alvin his singing was a little flat. Alvin again fails to respond, leading to more shouting from Dave. In the outro, the Chipmunks want to sing again, but Dave declines, warning them not to overdo it. The song fades out with playful spoken lines. The Chipmunk Song became a holiday classic, saving Liberty Records from near bankruptcy. It has remained a Billboard chart staple, appeared in countless films and TV showsincluding the 2007 live-action Alvin and the Chipmunks movieand helped launch the multimillion-dollar franchise. Both Billboard and The New York Times have ranked it among the greatest Christmas songs of all time. This arrangement is for flute and piano.
