A note from the composerThe first étude of Quaderno per Daniel is titled 12 Circles, a recreation of Johann Sebastian Bachs Prelude in C major (BWV 846). It unfolds as an unbroken movement of sixteenth notes, with each motif doubled, resulting in the repetition of every measure. The études harmony owes to Keith Jarretts improvisational style and Maurice Ravels constructivism based on sevenths and ninths, while its pulse comes from a varying rhythmic meter across consecutive measures.A continual downward modulation to the degree immediately below defines 12 Circles. This creates a structure in which measure 60 mirrors the first measure, but transposed downward by a semitone. In this way, twelve repetitions occur using the same transpositional process, each spanning 59 measures. The design gives the player freedom to shape dynamics and phrasing across the works harmonic and phraseological development.12 Circles also serves to improve the players manual dexterity. With practice, hand posture may gradually improve, building greater finger independence and strength. The transpositional structure also functions as a technical exercise in fingering. The present version contains three iterations of the original D-centered piece.- Dante Santiago Anzolini
