The late Bruce Chatwin has described the way in which Australian Aborigines memorise elaborate cross-country routes by chanting them in songlines. This present three-minute journey is not quite as elaborate, but the bass explores the territory laid out by a ground-line on the piano, burrowing beneath it and at a climactic moment dropping down a deep hole on the bottom string. All comes out well in the end, with the bass showing it now knows the route.Commissioned by David Heyes as part of the Fizz@50 Project.
