The first written version of this song comes from a 1706 opera by British composer Thomas d'Urfey. It is unknown if he wrote the melody or if it existed as a folk song before then. The earliest recording is from 1925. This song has been popular with young children for decades. It can be done as a cumulative song with each verse including the animal sounds from the previous verses. This arrangement makes the song more approachable for less experienced players. It includes optional note names, an easier key, and simplified rhythms to assist in learning it.
