Product Description

Corporal Casey (The Irish Washerwoman) came about when words were in search of a melody. Playwright Samuel Arnold was looking for an existing melody to use for the song Corporal Casey in his play The Surrender of Calais (1791). He decided to use the popular tune the Irish Washerwoman a jig (a lively folk dance that evolved from the 17th tune Dargason tune). Thus, there are no original words to The Irish Washerwoman" but she lends herself well to other aspirations. In the play, Corporal Casey is sung by the Irish soldier OCarrol who sings of a soldier gone to battle yet yearning his sweet lass Shelah. This arrangement is for 4-part SATB ensemble, with a baritone solo, to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 1:40+-. A great tune for St. Patricks Day or any Irish or Bluegrass festival.
