Behind the Music
This piece was commissioned by the National Shrine and Basilica of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio, for a special St. Patricks Day Sunday Mass in 2019. Composer Nathan Singer was honored to create an Irish-themed SATB choral work based on the beloved Irish Blessing, May the road rise up to meet you. Though the English version is a loose translation of the original Gaelic, the blessing is traditionally attributed to St. Patrick. Nathans fiancée, Stephanie, also contributed to the composition, making it a deeply personal and collaborative work.

Spiritual and Symbolic Meaning
Rooted in both nature and scripture, this blessing reflects Gods presence through creation. Phrases like the sun shine warm upon your face echo verses such as Luke 1:78 and Malachi 4:2. The wind can symbolize the Holy Spirit, while the rain on the fields represents Gods grace and mercyendless and sustaining.

Performance Notes
This song is meant to be performed with growing energy and passion, culminating in a powerful finish. Accompanists should highlight the percussive rhythm and drive the momentum forward. Drums may be added starting at rehearsal mark Bwhere the choir sings a cappellafor added impact. A flute or violin can also be featured, improvising over instrumental sections to enhance the songs Celtic character.
