Here are SCALES, EXERCISES AND PIECES from Méthode Elémentaire de Mandoline (1895) by Ernest-Louis Patierno. In the preface to the publication of the Method, Patierno says: There are several kinds of mandolins. We will only talk about the Neapolitan mandolin, the only one that is currently widespread and for which the present work has been composed. Many methods have already appeared before ours. We do not pretend to do better than the Authorized Masters whose principles have guided us in many circumstances. However, it seemed to us that the experience acquired during our professorship could benefit our students. The main element that Patierno deals with in his Method of the Neapolitan mandolin playing technique is measured tremolo, repeated strokes of the pick, which allows the sound to be prolonged for as long as necessary. When working on this method, I started writing out the tremolo note by note to better understand specific playing situations, to easily restore what I learned later, and to pass on what I learned to my students. This process resulted in the material you will find in this publication. Transcriptions are in modern notation including notes+TAB and fingerings of the right hand based on my performance.
