Set to the words of the 23rd Psalm, this prelude is appropriate for Good Shepherd Sunday, which falls on the Fourth Sunday of Easter. The scripture readings for this time include the image of Christ as the Good Shepherd who knows his sheep. This beloved hymn tune has rarely been made into a piano prelude. There are four variations in this setting, including a lively gigue and a haunting minor version. The piece modulates from C major to D major in the last partita.Of course, the prelude could also be used at funerals when Psalm 23 is requested.
