L. van Beethoven Moonlight Sonata (First Movement Selected Extract)

Arranged for Flexible String Orchestra

This arrangement presents a short, carefully selected extract from the first movement of Beethovens Moonlight Sonata, arranged for flexible string orchestra. Rather than the complete movement, the arrangement focuses on the most recognisable and atmospheric material, making it ideal for school concerts, teaching repertoire, and mixed-ability ensembles.

The scoring allows beginner and advanced players to perform together. The Part B lines are written entirely on open strings, making them suitable for very early-stage players who are developing tone production, listening skills, and ensemble confidence. More experienced musicians perform the standard string parts, which preserve the calm, flowing character of the original music and provide musical interest up to approximately Grade 8 level.

To maximise flexibility, a Violin II alternative part is included that doubles the Viola line, allowing the piece to be performed by ensembles with few or no viola players. The texture remains transparent and lyrical, retaining the reflective, meditative atmosphere for which this movement is so well known.

With a duration of approximately 3 minutes, this arrangement works well as a short reflective concert item, programme contrast, or accessible introduction to Beethoven, and is particularly suitable for school, youth, and community string orchestras.

Instrumentation: Flexible String Orchestra

Includes:

Violin B, Viola B, Cello B, Double Bass B (open-string parts)

Violin II (doubling Viola)
