This traditional Russian song was covered with new English lyrics in a version by Mary Hopkin as "Those were the days" which was a hit in the 1960s. Dorogoi Dlinnoyu is known in English as "The Long Road" and is very traditionally Russian in style - slow soulful verses, and choruses which start slowly and increase in tempo. The speed of the music at the end of the choruses is really up to the conductor but traditionally they would end as fast as possible, even with some Cossack dance moves! This version is musically fairly simple, I have catagorised it as intermediate as the Russian lyrics may present the biggest challenge to non-Russian singers, but I would say it is easier than many intermediate scores as there is a lot of repetition.I have versions of "Those Were the Days" available for SSA and SA choirs, but I think this version is more fun!
