Chanting for Soprano Saxophone explores the melodic line writing for the solo instrument. The main theme is stated in the beginning of the piece and then developed into various phrases played in the different register of the instrument. Those phrases in different registers are connected together using the gesture based on the rhythmic motif from the beginning statement. As the piece goes on, different developed materials are then interconnected together that then burst into long pedal tone sections that contrast between the extreme range of the instrument. Toward the end of the piece, the main theme from the beginning returns in a more calm manner. The theme of the piece is based on the arch shape melodic contour to mimic the sound of one chanting, hence the title Chanting.
