Robert Schumann's Fantasie Opus 17 for piano is among his most popular compositions. Its third and final movement, "Langsam getragen. Durchweg leise zu halten", is especially representative of Schumann's gift for sustained melody. The long tones of the melody seem to beg for an instrument that can sustain their sound. The violin does this exceptionally well, thus this arrangement is a natural extension of the original version for solo piano which lasts about 10 to 11 minutes. The harmonies are, at times, modern to the point where they foreshadow the spirit of Rachmaninov. The violin part has been given bowings and fingerings by Paul MacDowell. This arrangement is intended for use by advanced-intermediate students and also by professionals. There are no pedal markings in the piano part since the pianist (or their teacher) will know just what to do.
