Solo Piano arrangement of the popular sacred song. The left hand focuses on arpegiatted patterns in order to fill out the texture, in light of the more sparse and melodic right hand melody. As this was originally a choral piece with orchestral backing, the right hand comps for the multi vocal elements of the original through (essentially) chordal phrasing. This combination of elements makes for a rich and full sounding arrangement, but being confined to a solo instrument is also modest and subtle, making it ideal for christmas carol concerts or church nativity services. The song itself is understood to have originated in France sometime around the 19th century and not long after was then adapted with English lyrics by an American music critic and minister. It has since become (and remains) one of the most popular carols in the USA.
