Baldassare Galuppi (1706 - 1785), also known as il Buranello, after his birthplace on the island ofBurano, in the Venetian lagoon, lived in an age of transition. His early life saw Bach and Handel asgreat living composers, while in more mature years he was a contemporary of Haydn and MozartAs would befit such times, he also wrote music in both the "ancient" and "modern" styles. He canwrite concerti grossi in the style of Corelli as well as sonate that are full of Mozartian grace. This sonata was rendered famous by Arturo Benedetti-Michelangelo's recording of it on the pianoand this is how I first heard it.Here I present the first movement only.My version differs from the manuscript, which I have consulted, in that I "double" the values of thenotes to make it easier to read and also to avoid having phrases that last only one or two bars. I havewritten out most ornaments, reflecting how I would interpret them. I repeat bars 15 and 16, a repeatmissing in the manuscript, but which seems to me (and to Benedetti-Michelangeli) to be necessaryif we are to maintain the echo which Galuppi requires throughout. Most dynamics are to be found inthe source, though I did try to order them a bit for consistency's sake.
