A piece for solo fingerstyle acoustic guitar that came out of work on an arrangement of an old standard melody I heard recently played on piano. While I was working on the arrangement for guitar that matched the piano version, my daughter sent me a short video clip from a trip to Spain where a Spanish guitar duo were performing a Gypsy Rumba. Being a Flamenco guitarist by trade, I felt inspired to instead make a version of the melody in the style of a Gypsy Rumba, like that played by the Gypsy Kings. This version turned out to be so far removed from the original that I consider it to be an original in its own right. The title chosen for the piece hints at the title of the old standard and brings back fond personal memories of my years in Madrid where after an allnight session of music-making, I could dunk delicious crisp churros fresh out of the fryer in a cup of piping hot chocolate. Highly recommended! The piece is within reach of advanced intermediate students of fingerstyle acoustic guitar, nylon or steel strings. The polyrhythmic nature of the piece is typical of the afro-gitano Gypsy Rumba (Rumba Gitana) style of Flamenco. Like churros and chocolate, the piece is a real picker-upper and will enliven any performance. The final chord, following the harmonic A note, should float up like a cloud of steam coming off a cup of hot chocolate.
